WHAT IS BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a ground-based martial art and combat sport that emphasizes technique, leverage, and positional control over brute strength. Developed from Judo and traditional Jiu-Jitsu, BJJ teaches practitioners to control and submit opponents using joint locks and chokeholds — making it highly effective for self-defense regardless of size or athletic ability.

Beyond self-defense, BJJ is one of the most demanding and rewarding fitness activities available. A single class burns hundreds of calories while improving flexibility, coordination, and cardiovascular endurance. Many practitioners describe it as "physical chess" — a constantly evolving puzzle that keeps your mind as sharp as your body.

WHO IT'S FOR: Whether you're a complete beginner, a fitness enthusiast, a competitor seeking excellence, or a professional looking for stress relief — BJJ has something for everyone. Our adult classes welcome students from ages 18 to 60+.

A Single Class, Broken Down

01 Warm-Up

Move & Loosen

Show up in athletic wear. Mobility flow, breakfalls, shrimping, bridging. The body learns the language of grappling before the brain does.

02 Drill

Technique & Repetition

Coach demonstrates the day's technique. You partner up and drill it cold, then with progressive resistance. Reps build the wiring.

03 Roll

Positional Sparring

Live rounds against partners of every belt and every size. Tap early, tap often. This is where the technique meets reality.

04 Cool

Debrief

Stretch, breathe, talk through what worked. Walk out lighter than you walked in.

A Year in Three Frames

Day 1. Day 30. Day 365.

What changes when you stop trying it and start training it. Real markers, taken from the floor.

01 First Class 01DAY ONE · WHITE BELT
New adult BJJ student learning fundamentals at ZEN BJJ

You walk in nervous. You leave with a name.

Your first class is shrimping, breakfalls, and a single technique repeated until it feels less foreign. Nobody expects you to know anything. Everyone remembers being you.

By the time you're untying your belt, three people have introduced themselves. That's the room.

02 One Month In 30DAY THIRTY · STRIPING UP
Adult BJJ student training drills after one month at ZEN BJJ

Your body picks up the language.

Posture stops collapsing under pressure. Your hips remember a hip escape without a coach calling it. Cardio that used to die at minute four still has gas at minute eight.

First stripe is on your belt. The mat starts to feel like a place you belong instead of a room you're visiting.

03 One Year On 365YEAR ONE · A DIFFERENT ATHLETE
Experienced adult BJJ student rolling at ZEN BJJ after a year

You roll like a different person.

A year of consistent training rewires the body. Lean tissue replaces what used to be soft. Stress at work feels smaller because the room you walked into nervous is now the room you walk into for relief.

Blue belt is on the horizon. The belt is not the point. The person wearing it is.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Absolutely not! We welcome complete beginners and provide a supportive, structured environment to learn from the ground up. Every black belt started as a white belt. Our coaches are specifically trained to bring new students along at a comfortable pace.
For your first class, athletic shorts and a rash guard or t-shirt work perfectly. If you continue training, you'll want to invest in a Gi (uniform) and/or rash guard + shorts for No-Gi classes. We can point you to quality, affordable options.
BJJ is one of the safest martial arts because techniques are practiced at controlled speeds with partners who actively protect each other. Our coaches emphasize safety and proper tap-out protocol above all else. Injuries happen, but they're no more common than in recreational sports like basketball or soccer.
Progress varies by individual, but consistent training 2–3 times per week typically leads to your first stripe within a few months. Most dedicated students reach blue belt within 1–2 years of regular training. Remember: the journey is the reward!
Yes! We offer both Gi (traditional kimono uniform) and No-Gi (shorts and rash guard) classes throughout the week. Many students train both to develop a more complete grappling game. Check our schedule page for current class times.
